The Marionville Lady Comets defeated the Chadwick Lady Cardinals, 57-43, on opening night of this year’s basketball season.  The battle between the perennial powers was full of turnovers, fouls, and missed opportunities, a sure sign that both teams suffered from first-game jitters.

Chadwick managed to get out to a 10-4 lead before the Lady Comets could mount a comeback.  The Lady Comets tied the score at 12-12 and then took a 16-12 lead going into the second quarter.  With five minutes left to go in the second quarter, Chadwick’s Kailyn Rozell picked up her third foul, causing her to have to sit for the remainder of the half.  Marionville was quick to pick up on Chadwick’s loss, took advantage, and went into the locker room at half with an 11-point lead, 32-21.

“Once Rozell got into foul trouble, it went downhill fast,” said Chadwick head coach David Argo.  “It had the possibility of going from a close game to a blowout real quick.”

Chadwick, who only dressed eight players, would welcome Rozell back in the second half and mounted a comeback of their own.  The Lady Cardinals would fight and claw their way back, led by Rozell’s game-high 26 points, to get within five of the Lady Comets, 48-43.  On the Comets’ ensuing possession, with five minutes to go in the game, a pivotal moment occurred when Chadwick’s [Shayna] Adams picked up her fifth foul.  Without Adams in the game, the Lady Cardinals seemed to unravel and did not score the rest of the game.  Marionville went on a 9-0 run to put the Lady Cardinals away.

“We got back to within five and we got all ‘helter-skelter’ and weren’t doing things that we were supposed to be doing,” said Argo.  “We did not move the ball, it got really stagnant and we took shots that were not good shots.”
