A group of Chadwick students traveled to the Springfield Art Museum to listen to author Lois Lowry talk about her novel “The Giver” on April 2, 2015.
“The Giver,” which was a Newberry Award winner, has been translated into over 30 languages and has sold over 10 million copies and was recently made into a major motion picture. The book is considered a classic in the science fiction and young adult genres, and Chadwick students typically read the book as part of the middle school English curriculum.
The event was free and open to the public, and students in Mr. Walker’s high school English classes received bonus points for attending and writing a short report.
Most of the students who attended only did so only to earn the bonus points, but it ended up being a very positive experience. Senior Kailyn Rozell said, “I honestly did not think I would enjoy the presentation. I thought it would be dry and boring, but it really wasn’t.”
Her classmate Makenzie Walker admitted, “Honestly, until we got there, I thought we were going to listen to Ayn Rand, but I actually really enjoyed what she had to say.”
Sophomore Haley Farris said she found Lowry’s talk inspirational. “Possibly the biggest thing I took away from the event is that ideas to write can come from anywhere or anything, if only you are willing to use your creativity to transform the idea into something incredible,” she said.
