The Cardinals competed in the MTC Tournament at Niangua on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, placing second overall, and first among public schools.
Chadwick rolled over the Hurley Tigers in the first match with a 120-50 victory, and followed up by beating Niangua 120-90. In their third match, the Cardinals were defeated by the defending conference tournament champions, S of O, who pulled away to a 160-70 win, holding junior Evan Davis to a career-low 20 points. But Chadwick got back on track in the fourth quarter, defeating Bradleyville 120-80. They ended with a 130-20 trouncing of Everton.
The tournament was scheduled to be a full round robin of half-matches, but due to technical difficulties, SofO and Everton had to sit out the first round. Chadwick and S of O ended with four wins each, but only S of O ended the day with a perfect 4-0 record and a first place finish. Chadwick came away with second and a record of 4-1. Everton finished third place with a record of 2-2; Niangua and Bradleyville both finished with a record of 2-3; and Hurley finished 0-5.
Junior Evan Davis was recognized as one of the tournament’s leading scorers, racking up 250 points in the equivalent of 2.5 matches. With 100 points per match, Evan nearly matched the per game average of last year’s leading scorer, SofO powerhouse Kobe Mitchell, who scored 430 points in four matches or 107.5 points per match.
Senior Haley Farris was a newcomer to the team this year. She helped strengthen the team in area’s like math and art history, which was instrumental in wins against both Niangua and Bradleyville. She added 110 points in the tournament overall.
Junior Tyler Gardner added another 50 points.
Other players who saw minutes and contributed to scoring in the bonus round, included freshman Courtney Hill who started in place of Shyanne Sena, freshman Koltin Walker, junior Katelynn Owens, and returning junior Victoria Garrison.
Mr. Tyler Walker, the team’s “coach” or “quizmaster,” was very pleased with their second place finish and is already looking ahead to district competition in the spring.
