Third Graders Show They Have Backbone

On September 15, Mrs. Griffin's third grade class learned about vertebrates and invertebrates in their science class by making their own backbone.

The students had no idea how they could possibly make a backbone since it was something in their body. The students assembled the backbone with beads, small washers, and a pipe cleaner. The students bent one end of the pipe cleaner and slid on a bead then a washer. Then, Mrs. Griffin explained how the model resembled the workings of a real human spine.

Mrs Griffin said, "The students were really excited about making their backbone, and I think kids have more fun and learn more when they are getting hands on work. I think it helps them better understand things."

"I didn't know what i was doing but it was fun and I like bones," says Destiny Nelson.
